Memorial Weekend

Camping for Memorial Weekend this year was so fun! The kids were really in their element - Mackenzie hunting for bugs and Cameron right back on Papa's tractor.

The drive up was ok, although we paid $4.20 for gas once we were up there! I could have done without that. Also, Cameron (and to a point Mackenzie, too), kept getting these bug bites on his head that didn't seem to bother him, weren't anywhere else on his body, but were producing crazy amounts of bleeding. It was really weird and freaked me out at first. I was putting him to bed and noticed all of this (I mean a ton) of blood behind one of his ears. I washed it off and discovered a tiny little dot of a bug bite. As the weekend went on, he kept getting more that we would notice by a new scab on his scalp or blood dripping down his face. It was really quite gross and weird and we still have no idea what was actually biting him.

But, as far as positives go, Mackenzie loved the tire swing and just wanted to be pushed up there all weekend. The girls all went looking for deer one night and had a great time - Mackenzie is so silly, and what better of an audience than her Grandma and Aunt? We also went geocaching - somehow we decided that the cache we were looking for was down a snowmobile trail, so we took my dad's new truck off-roading. There were a few points that I though my mom was going to wet her pants! We finally called it quits when we got to a hill that looked to be going straight up. Probably good thinking. My dad said he would have tried it if he had better tires...

Cameron was very preoccupied with Papa's tractor and wanted to go for a ride whenever he could. He would have preferred to go himself, but of course he's not even two yet... He got that key in and out of the ignition a million times, but to turn it you need to have your foot on the brake, which he's not tall enough to reach, thank God! He was also up before 6am most mornings, which was lovely. It caught up with him, though, as was evident during his three hour nap on the car ride home. Jason caught him squishing little bugs with his fingers and laughing (such a boy!), but I caught him crying and backing away from a crawling caterpillar (still my baby). And speaking of caterpillars, Mackenzie brought home a jar full of them hoping to hatch some butterflies. I'm hoping that they live til Friday's show and tell, because we've already had a few casualties.

All in all it was a terrific little get away. Jason was not looking forward to going back to work (he was off from 1/2 day Friday til Tuesday), but we were all happy to get back home - comfy beds and hot showers - and pick up Mooch from the Pet Ritz. We couldn't take him camping with us, but it sounds like his weekend wasn't too bad. He loved his group playtime twice a day and was a model resident (or maybe they just want our business again?). He was very excited to see his family, and he said his sloppy hellos to all of us, but then he slept all night and all day today. I guess he had a good weekend, too!
